The Importance of CPR

Too many bystanders do not know how to save a victims life when his heart or respiration has ceased. Sadly, three out of four sudden deaths are due to loss of oxygen; this adds up to over 100,000 lives a year that could be saved by Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) if enough people knew the procedure.

CPR is an organized approach for assessing and handling a medical emergency. Learning the physical skills of mouth-to-mouth breathing and closed chest compressions, and their precise sequence, will help save the life of someone whose heart or breathing has stopped. CPR helps get oxygenated blood to the brain until life-support equipment is available to restart the heart.

CPR can save victims of:

  • Drowning
  • Heart attack
  • Electric shock
  • Lightning strike
  • Auto accident
  • Suffocation
  • Drug overdose

In order to learn the proper techniques of CPR, it is essential to learn from a qualified instructor. The American Heart Association sets the standards for CPR training and uses the mnemonic “ABC” to represent the three major functions restored by CPR:

  • Airway
  • Breathing
  • Circulation

Although CPR cannot save all victims whose hearts and lungs stop functioning, it does give many the chance to survive until further medical assistance becomes available.

Good Samaritan laws consider CPR to be a certified emergency medical procedure. People who have recently learned CPR should not be hesitant to save the life of another for fear of damage or liability.
